Tony Strickland Launches Campaign for State Senate

Huntington Beach Councilmember Running to Fight for California

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – Today, Huntington Beach City Councilman Tony Strickland announced his campaign to return to the California State Senate, District 36. With Janet Nguyen a heavy favorite to win a seat on the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Senate District 36 is likely to see a Special Election held in Spring 2025 to fill her vacancy.

“California needs leaders unafraid to stand up to the liberal overreach that comes out of Sacramento every day. In Huntington Beach, we have shown that conservative governance works. Gavin Newsom and the Democratic supermajority could use more Surf City common sense,” said Strickland. “That’s why, after much thought, prayer, and conversations with my wife Carla, I have decided to run to return to the State Senate.”

Tony Strickland was elected to the Huntington Beach City Council in November 2022 and immediately selected by his peers to serve as Mayor in 2023. While Mayor, Tony successfully fought to increase funding for law enforcement, dramatically reduced homelessness, authored California’s first Voter ID initiative, fought to empower parents, and balanced a $7 million budget deficit.

A former State Assemblymember and State Senator, Tony earned a reputation as a conservative fighter because of his history of suing former Governor Gray Davis over his illegal energy contracts, repeatedly attempting to eliminate the double taxation on gasoline, and ultimately earning a lifetime A-Rating from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association.

Tony Strickland lives in Huntington Beach with his wife Carla, a 30-year Huntington Beach resident. He has two children, “Tiny” Tony and Ruby, and two step-children, Graeme and Jameson.
